Vocational Service is one of Rotary’s Avenues of Service, which encourages Rotarians to serve others through their professions and to practice high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations and inspire others in the process.

Through vocational service, we promote high ethical standards in all our business dealings, recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations, and contribute our professional expertise and skills to addressing societal problems and needs.

The Rotary Club of Kapaa supports Vocational Service through the following initiatives:

  • Humanitarian Awards
  • Culinary Arts Scholarships
  • Kauai Green Business Initiative Awards
  • Kauai Green Giant Awards
  • Sustainability Scholarship
  • Outstanding Educator Award

2009 Humanitarian Award

The Rotary Club of Kapaa was pleased to be a sponsor of the Humanitarian Awards on November 17, 2009.  This year, our club recognized in the firefighter category, Fire Captain Steven Doi for his participation in the "Concert in the Sky," annual 4th of July Hospice fundraiser as the volunteer logistics coordinator.  According to Fire Chief Bob Westermann, Steven spends hundreds of volunteer hours coordinating, organizing and preparing.  He ensures that the Hospice event manager is kept up to date on all the hundreds of pieces of equipment that are used to support the event.  He maintains the inventories and works to find free or cheap replacements every year as the tear down starts.  Steven spends many days obtaining and organizing more than 100 set-up and tear-down volunteers. He manages the very tight schedule just days before the event until days after, to ensure the operations runs smoothly and without fail.  He coordinates the many outside services, as well such as electricians, plumbers, tents and freezers.  All the time, Steven is constantly checking to see if everyone is OK and has plenty of water to drink and food to eat.  He does this because he cares about the community and the great work that Hospice does.  He does this humbly and prefers not to be recognized.  The Fire Department as a mantra, called "Polishing the Badge."  Steven has one of the brightest badges in the department.
